National Text Analytics Resource
Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) National Implementation Project: Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are information-rich resources containing a detailed history of the patient. When the cumulative investment is considered, these clinical records represent expensive assets, and have high potential for re-use in both research and direct patient care. A central problem with data modern EHRs is the difficulty of generating structured data by clinicians and administrative staff. This means around 80% of the information in the clinical record remains locked in an unstructured form, presenting an obstacle to leveraging the data for downstream clinical applications and research purposes. The opportunity for delivering value-based care and clinical research has driven the need for Natural Language Processing (NLP) approaches to unlock the currently underutilised data. We will establish a NLP community that will address the complexity of clinical text through development of shared tooling and standards with inbuilt patient confidence and engagement to support joint working across industry, academia and the NHS. The community will be open and inclusive (with appropriate methods for assigning credit), and develop capability for UK-wide NLP research at scale whilst providing clear ‘quick-wins’ through exemplar projects, shared material and datasets for training and implementation, with the ultimate aim of integrating with other health data analytics.
