Therapeutic ultrasound
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound surgery (HIFU) In HIFU, cancer cells are destroyed by raising their temperature through the conversion of ultrasound to heat. The efficacy of HIFU has been demonstrated for a range of cancers including those of the liver, prostate and breast. There are a number of significant challenges currently hindering its widespread clinical application and the aim of this multi-centre 5 year EPSRC funded project (EP/F025750/1) in collaboration with colleagues at UCL, ICR and the University of Oxford to develop a patient-specific clinical High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) system for cancer therapy
