The sexual behaviour and sexual health of heterosexual-identifying men who have sex with men: understanding an understudied population to inform public health policy and practice
The sexual behaviour and sexual health of heterosexual-identifying men who have sex with men (H-MSM) is poorly understood. Recruitment of H-MSM to studies of sexual health and sexual behaviour can be extremely challenging, due to their marginalized status and the sensitive nature of the research, limiting the feasibility of meaningful quantitative epidemiological research. However, there is reason to believe that, due to unaddressed sexual health needs, heterosexual-identifying MSM may experience a disproportionate public health burden that put them and their sexual partners at risk of poor sexual health. This mixed methods project investigates the sexual behaviour, sexual health, and sexual healthcare engagement of H-MSM, adopting complementary quantitative and qualitative research methods that take into account the methodological challenges of studying this population. The ultimate aim of the project is to develop a better understanding of this population, so that health services can provide effective and holistic healthcare that benefits H-MSM and the wider population.
