UCL Health of the Public Grant
This interdisciplinary project brings together researchers from political sociology, social psychology, epidemiology and public health, and health inequalities to investigate whether ethnic- and sexual minority young people are at increased risk of poor mental health and wellbeing using a mixed-methods approach (with distinct quantitative and qualitative components). It also addresses health and equity issues outlined in the 2018 Government LGBT Action Plan. Substantial evidence shows that young-adults who identify as sexual and gender minorities have poorer mental health. There is also evidence of poorer mental health outcomes among ethnic minorities. However, there has been very little research which looks at ethnic minorities who also identify as LGBTQ+ and in general how intersecting oppressions and privileges relating to gender and sexual identities AND ethnicity impact health.
