A toolkit for improving and monitoring engagement with open access heritage collections in Wikimedia
This knowledge exchange and innovation project will develop an empirical toolkit that heritage organisations can use to improve the use of their open access collections online and measure long-term progress of the efficacy of these activities. The crux of the project is to use natural language processing to identify entries and resources on Wikimedia that relate to items in a collection as candidates for being linked. The potential improvement in rates and types of engagement as compared to a small number of manually selected entries has been previously demonstrated. Using part of the collection of the National Library of Wales as a case study this project will upscale this approach to a larger portion of the collection. The project will also engage with other relevant institutions and bodies including UCL Special Collections through a workshop to inform the method and outputs: of interest is to understand the perspectives of heritage managers on the use of the toolkit and identify parts of the digitisation and open linked data pipeline this toolkit can feed into, and the implications of this toolkit for the wider workflow.
