La Cotte de St Brelade West Ravine Excavations
Funded by Jersey Heritage this project is focused on deposits of the last cold stage preserved in the West Ravine at La Cotte de St Brelade, Jersey. Over six seasons a team of Palaeolithic archaeologists, led by Dr Matt Pope, will excavate deposits equivalent to those which preserved Neanderthal fossil remains and Middle Palaeolithic artefacts in the North Ravine part of the site. As these were excavated in the early 20th Century, this will be the first chance to bring modern excavation techniques and scientific understanding to the levels. The archaeological record of this part of the site has become more important since re-study of the Neanderthal fossils which suggests a non-typical shape to the teeth and the possibility of shared ancestry with Homo sapiens. The fieldwork is taking place alongside engineering works by experts from Geomarine, also funded by Jersey Heritage, to stabilise the site and protect it from coastal erosion.
