Roving Microscope
A community microscope club, of free-form microscopic lunches and more focused research events with residents of community gardens and food projects to explore soil ecologies in lots of different ways. The events became a multi-modal way of doing and expressing research which included urban mudlarking and foraging, mapmaking, painting and drawing, close writing practices, seedsharing, compost making and cooking and eating together. The Human-Soil Ecologies events programme aimed to build upon the successes of some of our previous events at Bethnal Green Nature Reserve (BGNR) by taking audiences deeper into the microscopic worlds that we inhabit and which inhabit us. The key aim was to shift relations between humans and microbial life through offering multidisciplinary perspectives and entry points for understanding and engaging with soil ecology, and its role within wider ecosystems. Through the lunches and workshops we aimed to develop new tools and graphics for communicating the science of ecology in an accessible way, attracting new audiences to the nature reserve, particularly those without a previous interest in ecology.
