Carers in crisis: Creative navigation of wellbeing on hospital wards during COVID-19
This is a SHS Dean's Strategic Funds-sponsored project collecting data from healthcare professionals on staff wellbeing and bettering its management. The pandemic has pushed national health infrastructures to their limit and staff burnout and PTSD are at an all time high. As medical staff struggle to maintain their own physical and mental health, creative interventions have been made in order to care for carers and sure up the health infrastructure. Drawing on a research method that pays attention ‘medical materialities’, this project asks (a) how might we better understand the biopsychosocial needs of health professionals and (b) what impact hospital infrastructure has on staff wellbeing and burnout rates c) what factors of the of the pandemic drove novel creative infrastructures and d) how might a critical awareness of the material culture of hospitals and their social relations help shape policy and practice in health settings in the future. A mixed-methods approach will see data collected via staff surveys, interviews, and material and spatial analysis..
