Biostratigraphy and palaeogeography of the Cenozoic foraminifera of Tethys and the American province.
My very special expertise in studying thin sections has been in great demand lately, especially from Oil companies. Biostratigraphic projects on the Far East (e.g. Shell through Corelab, wells offshore and outcrops onshore Indonesia) and the American province (e.g. Petrobras, wells offshore Brazil) enabled me to determine age and environment of deposition of the studied samples by analysing their organic contents (e.g. planktonic foraminifera, larger benthic foraminifera, rodophyte algae, and bryozoa, crustaceans (barnacles), echinoid and gastropods). I was also able to correlate results with my ongoing studies along Cyprus, Spain and Lebanon. Recently, my work has been concentrated on the Oligo-Miocene of the Middle and Far East. The reasons for this are varied: Cyprus is visited every year by the MSc Micropalaeontology class; I have a personal interest in Lebanon, where I spend my summer holidays!; and I have been involved for some time with the university of London Consortium (University College London, Birkbeck, Royal Holloway University of London) for Geological Research in South East Asia (including Indonesia, Borneo, Papua New Guinea). This line of research incorporates studies of particular foraminiferal taxa, as viewed in random thin-sections of limestones. These foraminifera are used as indicators of reef palaeoenvironment and to provide biostratigraphic ages: their evolutionary patterns allow accurate and refined stratigraphical correlation, and knowledge of the controls on their distribution allow deductions to be made concerning changes in biofacies and the significance of these changes.
