Management Practices at the Front-End of Projects
There is over-whelming evidence that the front-end of projects – the pre-sanction stage where the business case, project strategy, and technical options are progressively assessed, selected and developed – is the area where a project’s major problems are often seeded and where opportunities for improving value most lie. Managing the front-end is critical to project success. Yet although we have a relatively mature understanding of what managing projects in down-stream delivery involves – once the project characteristics and targets have been set – we have not yet got a good generic understanding of what managing the front-end entails. Attaining this is the aim of this study. The study will begin by mapping typical front-end activities and practices for a range of project types and sectors. It will then explore the roles of management in ensuring these are done well. Finally, it will assess what needs to be done to improve the management of the front-end.
