Exuberance: New Digital Virtuosity in Contemporary Digital Architecture
Commissioned guest-editor of AD Architectural Design Exuberance: New Digital Virtuosity in Contemporary Digital Architecture, 80th anniversary re-design launch issue, John Wiley & Sons Ltd, Chichester UK, pp. 1-104 of 144. This title of AD—one of the most respected and best distributed architectural bookazines (book/magazine) worldwide—heralds a new era of exuberance in digital design. The objective is to establish for the first time—and against the predominant digital debate—a research by design context of digital theory and digital tectonics not solely dependent on software packages, computational methods, modelling techniques or scripting codes. Thus the publication questions and debates a plethora of joyful and intelligent ways (technological and phenomenal solutions) in which experimental digital architecture manages to cope with the contemporary turmoil in global politics, economics and ecology. At the same time it celebrates and considers the contemporary digital avant-garde within the context of a new Baroque period of formal theatricality and digital performance, of an almost Neo-Rococo extravagance of fashion, product, and building design and of the lavishness of Middle and Far-Eastern urbanism. Exuberance features an international coterie of architects and seminal figures such as Peter Cook and Wolf D Prix, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Marjan Colletti, Evan Douglis, CJ Lim, Ali Rahim, Yael Reisner, Robert Harbison, Judith Clarke, Neil Spiller, Kjetil Thorsen and Tom Wiscombe. Apart from being at the cutting edge of digital design nowadays, all contributors are educators. Many of the articles feature student work from some of the most respected institutions worldwide: SCI-Arc Los Angeles, University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Bartlett and Westminster University London. It was chosen by the publisher as the redesign issue for the 80th anniversary of the magazine. It reached the number 1 chart as bestseller in 'Structure & Design' on amazon.co.uk on April 22nd 2010, at 9:50. It was reviewed in Computer Arts, August 2010 and in Domus 939 La Nuova Utopia, September 2010 (Italy, pp. 114-8, Italian and English) by Neil Spiller.
