The Interior of Vision
Refereed article: Yeoryia Manolopoulou, ‘The Interior of Vision: Beckett’s Film and Viewing Instrument I’, The Journal of Architecture, Volume 9, no.3, 2004 (4,100 words, 14 figures). This work crosses psychoanalysis, film, science and art to examine theories of vision that critique Renaissance’s perspectival model of space. It examines self-perception and involves the construction of a viewing instrument, arguing for a surrounding (and not only frontal) model of vision. It is the first work which links Lacan’s and Beckett’s thinking on space and vision. 'Viewing Instrument I' was a permanent item of a periodical exhibition of Bartlett works, funded by the British Council, and exhibited in London, Kosice, Bratislava and Prague between 2003 and 2005. It has also appeared in magazines in Greece, Turkey, and Taiwan. My interest in spatial perception and in architecture as a discourse of the visual is ongoing since then.
