GABA modulatory steroids in the brains of mutant mice insensitive to this action
Certain reduced metabolites of progesterone and of deoxycorticosterone potently enhance the actions of the inhibitory transmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABAa receptors. The laboratory of Professor T Smart at UCL has generated mice with a mutation in the GABAa receptor which renders it insensitive to these GABA-modulatory steroids and we are investigating the effect of this mutation on their production and metabolism in the brain.
