The recent financial crisis has generated a favourable climate in which practitioners and academics are keen to reassess the validity of existing financial theories and techniques and to adopt new methods. This climate allows for more creativity and openness in financial mathematics in order to innovate and combine mathematical techniques from various fields in the analysis of financial markets and assets. Our research focuses largely on the application of engineering mathematics in the areas of market finance, portfolio finance and corporate finance to improve models and understand the behaviour of markets, assets and firms. In so doing we depart slightly from traditional financial theory and adopt concepts previously considered to be outside the scope of traditional financial economics. The aim is not to abandon financial theory in general, but rather to adopt techniques which will help us to better understand financial markets and assets. Our intention is to contribute to asset allocation methods, forecasting tools, diversification measures, asset pricing models, and financial theories with increased accuracy and adequacy, yet without departing completely from traditional finance.
