Democratic theory and governance
My research explores the themes of urban governance and the relationships between citizens and modern states. I have made a particular contribution to debates over Foucauldian understandings of governance systems and contemporary modes of citizenship. Whilst other geographers have written extensively on Foucault from a historical perspective, few have engaged directly with the relevance of such ideas for the contemporary governance of cites and urban and social policy. My own conceptual work in this area has developed significantly over the last decade or so, with a particular emphasis on the relationships between the governmentalities of policy-makers and shifting modes of citizenship. This body of scholarship has been underpinned by in-depth, cross-national comparative research on how cities and regions are governed in different contexts and how these relationships can be conceptualised and made sense of. I have published work on cities and governance systems in the UK, the EU, the US, and East Asia and used these to develop comparative methodologies and ways of thinking.
