The politics of community
My work has contributed to conceptual debates over the governance and management of communities and the relationships between place-space dynamics and democratic systems. I have specifically undertaken research on the political activities of business and residential communities in cities across the world and their role in shaping policies and programmes. Some of my research has specifically examined the governmentalities and rationalities of different sectors of the business community. It has challenged clich├ęd characterisations of business politics that dismiss business actors as short-termist and narrowly self-interested. Other projects have looked at the role of smaller businesses in the politics of urban and regional development, with a particular focus on the London Olympics and the effects of relocation on business competitiveness, their contribution to the creation of sustainable cities, and their connections to residential communities and regeneration. In more conceptual terms this work has been used to interrogate dominant understandings of urban development, legacy-building, and top-down forms of government and decision-making.
