A Failure Criterion for Concrete
The failure of concrete in structures is defined separately in different ways for states of compression and tension. In this way it differs from ductile metals for which a single shearing criterion (either Tresca or Von Mises) is used to encompass all states of stress in any or all of the three spatial dimensions. The reasons for this lack of a pure condition for brittle materials like concrete has been reviewed and an alternative is being thoroughly assessed. The result is promising to provide a single criterion for concrete which allows the modelling of the unloading of structures where desired, for example in earthquake resistant design. Researchers are Nasreddin and Eyre.
