Ultrasound induced Neuro-modulation
The aim of the study is to investigate whether focused ultrasound can induce neural activity in deep structures in the cerebral cortex of the brain. The mechanism is unclear but is thought to involve mechanical vibration of the neural cell membranes which opens transmembrane ion channels, leading to depolarisation and initiation of action potentials. Another aim of the study is therefore to better understand the underlying mechanisms of ultrasound neuro-modulation.
