Axonal KV7 channel function
We have recently shown that the axon initial segment of hippocampal neurons express voltage-gated K+, KV7, channels which regulate action potential initiation and action potential frequency (Shah et al. (2008) PNAS, 105, 7869-74). In addition, unlike somatic KV7 channels which affect synaptic potential integration, axonal KV7 channels have no effect on synaptic potential integration measured at the soma but affect coupling between synaptic potentials and spikes (Shah et al. (2011) J. Physiol., 589, 6029-38). Hence, axonal and somatic KV7 channels are likely to affect neuronal excitability differentially. We are continuing to further explore the effects of axonal KV7 channels with funding from the Wellcome Trust.
