Measuring and tracking the development of material in coronal mass ejections from the Sun
This is an innovation on an old method used in astronomy: to measure the amount of hydrogen along the line of sight to a source whose spectrum is known. Our trick is to use SDO/AIA's rapid cadence and multiple wavelengths as a pseudo-spectrometer to estimate the amount of ejected prominence in each pixel, during a spectacular prominence eruption. We're working now on extending this to whole prominences, both static and eruptive, in part with Impact Ph.D. student Jack Carlyle.
