Rootedness in Mobility
This 100,000-word research text uses spatial mobility as a lens through which to review accepted understandings of rootedness/belonging and to re-read the history of the United States in the second half of the nineteenth Century. It uses manuscript travel diaries, quilts and sod houses created by emigrants and songs composed by cowboys to consider how travellers wrote a parallel narrative of American identity and belonging and, in doing so, reveals place-making and home-making as acts of mobility.
