Borderlands - Gas Food Lodging
"Borderlands - Gas Food Lodging" is a photographic project investigating a distinctly American cultural landscape: the backstage area of long-distance car travel. Founded on movement, the United States still defines itself through ceaseless and easily attainable mobility. This project shows the very spaces which sustain that mobility: roadside clusters of gas stations, fast food restaurants, convenience stores and motels. It creates a photographic record of each of the service areas along Interstate 10 from its beginning in Jacksonville, Florida, to its end in Los Angeles, California (3,960 kilometres). This research was carried out in collaboration with James Santer and selected images from the project were exhibited at the Bartlett School of Architecture in October 2009 and published by the University of California at Berkely's "Ground Up" Journal in 2011.
