CERN - Transportation Requirements and Related Infrastructure
The scope of the CERN project was to record and analyze existing transportation conditions and needs of the CERN community and to highlight innovative solutions for establishing a sustainable transportation system for the CERN community. Within this context, the objectives of the proposed project were: 1. Analysis of travel patterns of the CERN community (staff, users, visitors), 2. Proposals for possible improvements – additions to the CERN transportation system, 3. Examination of the impacts on demand from possible improvements, 4. Proposals and plans for immediate as well as medium and longer range improvements on community mobility, and 5. Proposals for innovative and environmentally friendly (green) technologies, to improve on the living and working quality of the CERN community. Proposed improvements focused on enhancing accessibility by mitigating the adverse impacts of transport congestion and promoting green transportation alternatives. The ultimate goal was to couple CERN’s reputation as research centre of innovation and excellence with a model environmentally friendly transportation community.
