EPSRC Impact Acceleration Award – Injecting transport research findings into policy, practice and industry
There is often a considerable lag of a decade or more between research findings being presented in academic journals and them being taken up by policy makers, practitioners and industry. This is due primarily to two kinds of barriers: differences in terminology and framing between the academic and policy/commercial worlds, and lack of communication networks which span the various communities. This is a particular problem with regard to transport research, where the state-of-practice lags far behind the state-of-the-art sometimes by several decades, and there are few mechanisms for policy makers, practitioners and industry to engage with academics. The project aims to create bridges between researchers and stakeholders, particularly policy makers and to ensure that transport related research is rapidly absorbed into policy making. A series of seminars, meetings and events will be organised about transport-related cross disciplinary themes, of particular policy relevance and public and commercial interest. The outcomes from the activities will be synthesised into a series of Policy and Practice Briefing Notes, written in accessible language and highlighting outputs of relevance to specific audiences. The initiative will conclude with a national conference.
