The goal of the project "Social Buildings" is to investigate the effect of a building's configuration in modulating people's interactions. It is a research collaboration between UCL, computer scientists at the University of Cambridge, and researchers of the SocioPatterns project at the ISI foundation. It combines methods of direct observation of interaction patterns in space, a survey and RFID sensing technology to capture face-to-face interactions in a single case study of a University Building in Cambridge. The overall aim of the project is to investigate spatial and social rationales for interaction patterns (observed both by participant observation and by technological means) and create new insights into the spatiality, temporality and dynamics of interactions. Additionally, the comparison of a traditional data gathering method and an automated method is expected to shed light on the quality of research methods.
