Professor John Martin, with Professor Anthony Mathur is leading three randomised, controlled, blinded clinical trials in the use of autologous bone marrow stem cells for the treatment of heart disease in three populations: acute myocardial infarction (where cells are delivered very early after the heart attack), chronic heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy (in collaboration with Professor Bill McKenna). Several sub-studies are investigating the biological effect of autologous bone marrow stem cells in the myocardium. The research is supported by the UK Stem Cell Foundation and by the Heart Cells Foundation
