Soil Mechanics
The soil mechanics group at UCL has very broad research interests, many of them overlap with the interests of other colleagues, contributing to the development of collaborations and integration between researchers. The Soil Mechanics group is interested in the mechanical behaviour of natural and reinforced soils, geophysical methods applied to site characterization, particularly important since more and more “brown field” sites have been chosen for urban development in UK. Another interest is in instrumentation and monitoring of soil structure interaction, where research is being carried on in the analysis of deformation in deep excavations with particular emphasis on the measurement of displacements using different monitoring techniques such as laser scanner, photogrammetry, optical fibres and the more conventional instrumentation. On the numerical side, there is particular interest in Soil structure interaction using the traditional FE methodology as well as Discrete Element Method (DEM). This also integrates very well with the instrumentation and monitoring of soil/structure interaction, allowing us to better understand the performance of the designed structures. There is also research being conducted in Constitutive modelling fed back by laboratory tests done by our researchers and students.
