This multidisciplinary group focuses on fundamental research underpinning the application of biocatalysis in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Established in 2005, as the Biocatalysis-Chemistry-Engineering Interface (BiCE) programme, the research team has won awards in the areas of Chemical Biology (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2010), Bioprocessing (Institution of Chemical Engineers, 2010) and for translation of research into industrial practice (Evonik Science-to-Business award, 2008). Current research addresses the identification, cloning and improvement of enzyme and whole-cell biocatalysts and the creation of novel technologies to speed bioprocess development, particularly related to automated microwell and microfluidic (continuous flow) systems. An increasing emphasis is the integration of Synthetic Biology principles to help address the challenges of chemical and pharmaceutical manufacture from sustainable chemical feedstocks.
