The Marine Research Group focuses on design and engineering analysis of ships and offshore platforms. This includes novel hull forms and systems, electric propulsion, control, computational and experimental marine hydrodynamics, fatigue and fracture mechanics, and non destructive evaluation, structural reliability and risk assessment. There is close co-operation between the groups so that some projects are undertaken by staff from different groups combining together and can extend to engineering systems other than marine structures.
Group Capabilities
o Surface ship and submarine design
o Design methods, including Computer Aided
Graphical Design
o Electric Power Engineering
o Electric surface ships and submarines
o Computational and experimental hydrodynamics for
naval architecture, offshore, deep sea and coastal engineering
o Control
o Green Shipping including low carbon
emission
o Advanced materials, lightweight structures,
impact and explosion engineering, structural integrity and risk assessment
