Ceramic Technology Research Network
Our network will collaborate in developing and disserminating appropriate analytical techniques for the study and reconstruction of past ceramic technology. This includes analytical methods that characterise the composition of pottery fabrics, identify forming techniques, reconstruct firing conditions and assess vessel function. Studies of ceramic technology can inform wider debates about the social and economic context of material culture. The institute's excellent analytical facilities and diverse ceramic colelctions already support research on ceramic technology, so this network will primarily act as a catalyst to encourage and extend that research. Aims of the Ceramic Technology Network include: 1. To discuss the application, improvement and integration of a range of analytical approaches to the identification of ancient pottery technology. 2. To discuss and develop theoretical approaches to the social context of ceramic technology. 3. To encourage the appropriate and productive use of the institutes research facilities and collections.
