Infrastructure Management
Today, the majority of the world’s population lives in cities. Urban areas are responsible for consumption of the three-quarters of the world’s energy and emission of 80% of green house gases. To face the challenges of our increasingly urbanized societies, infrastructure management is becoming an emerging area of research in design, planning and management of facilities, services, technologies, and policies that maximize resource and economic productivity, and minimize societal, environmental and ecological risks and impacts associated with urban infrastructure systems. The multidisciplinary “infrastructure management” group at UCL aims to address the global infrastructure challenges by adopting a systems approach: By investigating urban infrastructures, we strive to (1) address technical, economical, societal, and environmental objectives in an integrated manner while seeking infrastructure design, engineering and utilization solutions; (2) monitor the behaviour of human and natural infrastructure systems to capture their embedded uncertainties and dynamism; (3) incorporate ecological limits and resource constraints into the urban infrastructure decisions; (4) develop and analyze the future scenarios of urban infrastructure systems and their interactions; and (5) provide a strategic insight into the design, implementation, and evaluation of infrastructural sustainability targets and policies.
