Energy and Transport
The UCL Energy Institute studies all modes of transport across space and time. It is divided into three groups - aviation (Air Transportation Systems Lab, www.atslab.org), shipping and land transport (Mobility as a Service Lab, www.maaslab.org). It leads the development of integrated assessment models of the global air and sea transportation systems, alongside the research in the sector of new mobility concepts, such as Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and new mobility technologies, such as automated vehicles and drones. It produces a large number of research publications, including journal articles, book chapters, books and reports accommodating a growing number of PhD students in the energy and transport area. This includes future transportation fuels research (hydrogen and biofuels). It provides the shipping component to models of the International Energy Agency and the International Transport Forum, decision making support tools to authorities to lead the transition to a low carbon new mobility era in a sustainable manner as well as consulting services to several public and private organisations. It develops models and platforms for integrated urban and regional spatial and transport planning taking into account the dynamics and the business models of the new mobility services and technologies. Finally it has diverse sources of funding, from national and international research councils to industrial funding.
