Clinical Trials Group
The Clinical Trials Group of the Department of Surgery co-ordinates large multi-centre phase III randomised cancer clinical trials. The objective of the studies is to evaluate treatments for patients with cancer. This is done by very careful scientific design of studies, collection of information on treatment and follow-up of patients placed on specific treatment protocols, and appropriate analysis of the data obtained. The objectives of the Clinical Trials Group are: To run high quality trials (and other clinical research projects) that will change the outcome for patients either in terms of overall or relapse-free survival or through improved quality of life. To devise ways of integrating biological and genomic evaluations and to appraise the use of new technologies for the facilitation of trial management. These goals are achieved by implementing good design, the application of sound ethical principles, appropriate statistical advice, quality data collection and monitoring, timely analysis and ultimately publication. To run trials in an efficient and cost effective manner. To attract new questions for 'trialing'. To develop clinical trial methodology.
