Bioprocessing

This theme aims to create links between recent advances in life science and engineering to deliver solutions underpinning the UCL Grand Challenges of Human Wellbeing and Global Health.
Research studies address the creation of processes for production of pharmaceuticals (e.g. new antibiotics to overcome the increasing global problem of microbial resistance), new highly potent macromolecular therapies (e.g. low cost vaccines), and the controlled proliferation and differentiation of human cells for therapy.
Research also addresses the increasingly important issues of environmental impact and sustainability with work on biorefinery technologies including biofuels and the production of chemicals from renewable resources. Not surprisingly, this research theme is highly cross-disciplinary involving biochemical, chemical and mechanical engineering, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, biology, structural and molecular biology, clinical medicine and surgery.
