Part 1 uses data to describe the distribution of acidified lochs in Scotland in relation to the pattern of total sulphur deposition and shows how such data can be used to define critical sulphur loads for individual sites. Almost all the sites are sensitive to acidification with values for Ca2+ of < 100 μeq l-1. Only Loch Urr in Galloway has a higher value. Sites throughout the rest of Scotland were selected to represent most of the sensitive regions of the country, as well as to form a series along a gradient of decreasing total sulphur deposition from the south to the northwest. Part 2 reports on a research group at University College London working in cooperation with the Building Research Establishment, which has been exploring the question of stone conservation with a view to providing evidence on the nature and rates of stone weathering processes and on the relations between atmospheric pollution and stone decay. Part 3 considers the observed and modelled spatial distributions of pollutants across the UK. The Harwell Trajectory Model was developed to this end. -after Authors
