Abstract
A detailed study, the first of its kind, of Copernicus's doctrine of gravity. Copernicus used a Neoplatonic definition that he found in the Suda, a Byzantine lexicon; unbeknown to him the definition was a quotation from the sixth-century Platonist John Philopponus. Copernicus supplemented this account with a Stoic interpretation of the cosmic role of gravity, derived from his reading of Pliny and Cicero.
