Symptoms in the bones, joints and muscles are well- recognized, albeit rare, clinical manifestations of sarcoidosis. A recent review cites the prevalence of bone, joint or muscle involvement in sarcoidosis as 0.9 percent (Dempsey et al. 2009). This low figure almost certainly refers to symptomatic disease. As shown later in this chapter, plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detect asymptomatic bony lesions in a larger proportion of patients with sarcoidosis (Neville et al. 1977; Moore et al. 2005). Never- theless, musculoskeletal involvement is neither common nor especially troublesome in most patients with sarcoidosis.
