Biomaterials for Oral and Dental Tissue Engineering
Biocomposites are blends of different materials used for various tissue engineering and restorative applications mainly due to their biocompatibility, superior mechanical properties, and biodegradability. Some important tissues in our body are considered as natural biocomposites whereas most of restorative materials are synthetic biocomposites. Although, the term "biocomposites" is popularly referred to resin-based composites, most of dental restorative materials such as ceramics and polymer blends, by definition, are also fallen in this category. In this chapter, we review the basic chemistry of biocomposites and their oral and dental applications.
