Abstract
We present recent work undertaken with the aim of exploring how the intrinsic motivation of Lego construction, musical instrument making and music making, can be used to expose children to design concepts in software engineering. We report on the motivation and design of three consecutive school sessions we ran to give children practical experiences of learning about design by constructing instruments, critically examining them, playing music together with them, and gradually extending their capabilities to the use of computer-based sound production triggered by Lego. We found evidence of design thinking taking place, critical engagement leading to ideas for improving design, and clear enjoyment of the approach we have taken. Staff feedback was also very positive and there are many future directions.
