Abstract
With a focus on British colonial rule in India, this paper looks at how we might think about reading the material qualities of buildings and towns as a way of understanding provincial areas within colonial landscapes or the broader category of 'colonial margins'. It suggests reading materialities of the built environment not just as a way to generate a history for itself, but also of other 'immaterial' aspects and processes, and equally, to harness readings of the 'immaterial' for a fuller and richer history of built environments as material culture and material practices.
