Abstract
We report on the optical trapping of a number of micro- and nanoscale particles using beams with a non-uniform state of polarization. We demonstrate a holographic interferometric method that is intrinsically stable to phase fluctuations for synthesising the cylindrical vector beams, and show how the focal volume and hence the geometry of the optical trap can be shaped by the polarization state. We apply this method to the optical trapping of a variety of microscopic and nanoscopic particles, and measure the spring constants of the optical trap. © 2011 OSA: BODA/NTM/OMP/OTA.
