Abstract
This stage design was a collaboration with choreographers Charlotte Edmonds and Robert Binet, and commissioned by the Royal Ballet London to celebrate Wayne McGregor’s 10th anniversary in form of a triple bill. The implemented research transformed the Royal Opera House’s Clore Studio from its everyday function as a dance studio into an immersive, intimate theatre. Its design draws inspiration from the human moving body and the principles of a heart-lung machine and extra-corporal circulation. The 11 x 5-meter interactive kinetic hanging spatial modulator explored the idea of ‘breathing space’ through movement and light, exploiting the mathematical and gravitational forces of a catenary curve.
Movements between the dancer and the ephemeral ‘machine’ were carefully choreographed, exploring the relationship between human and automation.
