Abstract
The Sub-Saharan African region faces many healthcare challenges including a shortage of doctors and specialists, inadequate access to necessary medications and patient limitations. Since the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the region's healthcare system has been severely crippled. Today, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence of heart diseases in children and young adults, including congenital heart disease (CHD), rheumatic heart disease (RHD), and cardiovascular effects of malaria. This has led to the idea of establishing the Heart care and research foundation, Rwanda - a platform that fosters a new delivery model of state of the art public tertiary healthcare to underdeveloped countries.
