Our research has already established that Professional Development is possible on the large-scale. This has implications for traditional campus-based provision and means MOOCs are capable of addressing many of the educational challenges implicit in the Sustainable Development Goals, for example, equipping professionals with skills in teaching, healthcare and engineering. However, we still need to understand which digital pedagogies are effective for learning on the large scale. We report findings from online interviews with MOOC participants about how they learn on a MOOC, using an adapted repertory grid technique. We identify a number of themes, which are: discussion and social learning, applied learning, digital engagement, learning design, inclusive learning and deep learning. From these, we draw out important implications for learning design, and for effective evaluation using our MOOC Value Creation Methodology. We show how we are implementing these in MOOCs we have designed and run in Arabic and English, marking a shift from the idea of a MOOC as a ‘Course’ to a process of ‘Collaboration’ among professionals - that is, a Massive Open Online Collaboration.
