Direct measurement of anisotropic probe motion in ordered systems

Abstract
The direct measurements of probe θ and φ diffusion in an ordered medium of oxazine 4-5CB system are discussed. Results indicate that the dynamics are dominated by anisotropic viscosity, which increases for φ motion as the liquid crystal order relaxes. With increasing temperature, θ diffusion shows the expected Arrhenium temperature dependence for liquid crystal diffusion. These observations do not agree with treatments of rotational diffusion in a cylindrical symmetric aligning potential, which have been extensively used to analyze steady-state fluorescence data in anisotropic media.
