Abstract
The book explores the 17th century Jewish messianic-kabbalistic heresy of Sabbataianism and it 18th-19th century sectarian offshoots, where - exceptionally in the Jewish tradition - women featured as an active constituency, functioned as prophetesses and propagandists of the messianic gospel, with some achieving remarkable prominence as consorts of male messianic figureheads, and one emerging as a messianic figurehead herself.
