Wireless-over-fiber technology-bringing the wireless world indoors
Abstract
Wireless-over-fiber (WOF) technology, referring to the transmission of wireless signals in their respective radio frequency passbands over fiber, is being used to transport radio frequency signals and enhance wireless coverage in buildings. The technology is used for any modulation format and protocol and the wide bandwidth of optical fiber allows different services to share the same infrastructure, making the WOF approach a multi-operator and multi-service technology. In a WOF scenario, the main purpose is to deliver a number of wireless services from a base station to a remote location served by an antenna unit where coverage is required. Researchers at University College London (UCL) have investigated the transmission of cellular and broadband wireless IEEE 802.11b/g signals over multi-mode optical fibers (MMF). The Zinwave Distributed Antenna System (DAS) can distribute a range of combined wireless services over either single-mode or multi-mode fibers.
