Several measures to control and reduce the software maintenance costs are discussed. It is pointed out that software maintenance costs are responsible for up to 90% of the total life cycle cost of software. It is suggested that a good understanding of the existing software system and its code is very important as most of the maintenance costs arise from this activity. Categorization of the maturity level of the existing process, well defined maintenance process and improvement in the readability of the code is recommended for reducing the maintenance costs.
