Existing Web Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDSS) advice users and provide information and analysis, which are amongst these situations where trust and credibility are important considerations. Although it is widely acknowledged that maps can misinform users and that people have great difficulty interpreting maps, no one attempted to understand how trust is constructed in this context. At the same time recent trends in Web Mapping 2.0 and neogeography, extended the number of people who use and develop these applications, to further include people without any GIS knowledge (non-experts) and as the sophistication of these systems is growing the need to further research trust becomes more urgent. Interaction with online systems generates trust perceptions when these systems encapsulate risk and uncertainty, because as previous studies suggest, these increase vulnerability and influence a decision to rely on them. This paper discusses the case of an online SDSS which allows non-experts to participate in the decision-making process for the site selection of a nuclear waste repository in the UK, where risk and uncertainty are both existent. Using techniques derived from the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) field the elements which influence non-experts’ trust perceptions in this context were investigated. The results further provide an insight into how similar applications should be developed in order to improve trust through interface design.
