Abstract
This paper describes the design of the Silk-2 network, which provides VSAT-based access to the European academic Internet for the research networks of the Caucasus and Central Asia (Silk countries). This network fills a significant gap in the worldwide networking picture in a region where connectivity is extremely expensive. Silk-2 advances significantly the collaboration between Europe and the Silk countries. The paper discusses also the design implications and trade-offs both of providing multimedia services and of extending the network under different assumptions of traffic and equipment sophistication. This paper was the only invited one at the 2007 APAN-24 meeting.
